The making

Light, from the fire that marked it.

A saggar is a sealed vessel inside the kiln: a small world of smoke, salt and metal. What happens in there can’t be planned, only invited. Each bowl in the collection is fired this way once, poured once, and never made again.

01

Wrapped

Every bowl is wrapped by hand in what the season gives: copper wire, sea salt, banana skins, West Coast seaweed, sawdust, dried fynbos. Then it’s sealed in foil and laid in the kiln.

02

Fired

Inside the saggar the fire has nowhere to go. Copper fumes, salt flashes, carbon smokes into the clay. Nobody, not even I, knows what a bowl will look like until it is unwrapped in the ash.

03

Poured

Once cooled, each bowl is cleaned, sealed and filled by hand with 500 ml of unscented candle wax, and given its own numbered label. No perfume: just a quiet flame and the marks of the fire.

Numbered. Named. Never repeated.

Every candle leaves the studio with a label written for it alone: the firing it came from, its number in that season’s firing, and what was wrapped around it in the saggar.

Keep the label. When the last of the wax is gone, the bowl stays with you: for keys, rings, a small plant, or a refill from the next season.

Only four times a year

Four firings. Four seasons of the Swartland.

The kiln is opened once a season. Every subscriber’s bowls go into that season’s fire, and each season has its own saggar recipe, so every season marks the clay differently. No two bowls, and no two seasons, are ever the same.

For full-year subscribers

Come to the fire.

Stay with the collection for all four firings, a full year, and you’re invited to a saggar firing in Koringberg. Wrap a bowl of your own with copper, salt and whatever the veld offers. Watch the fire do its work under the Swartland sky. Unwrap it the next morning in the ash.

Your bowl comes home with you, and so does that season’s candle. There’s no accommodation at the studio, so plan to stay over at one of the local guesthouses or an Airbnb nearby.

  • Full-year subscribers only: all four firings
  • Wrap and fire your own saggar bowl
  • Stay over at a local guesthouse or Airbnb
  • Date announced four weeks ahead

The gift

Give a season. Or give the year.

A gift from the collection arrives wrapped in brown paper and twine, with a handwritten card and the edition label. Give the full year and it includes an invitation to a saggar firing, so the person you love can come and make their own.

Pairs are available too: choose “The Pair” in the gift form (R1 800 a season · R7 200 a year).

From the studio
“I wanted something people could live with every day that still carries the fire in it. You light it, and for a while you’re back at the kiln with us.”

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Is every bowl really different?+

Yes. Saggar firing can’t be repeated: the pattern comes from how the copper, salt and plant matter sat against the clay in the fire. Every bowl is numbered within its firing.

Why are the candles unscented?+

Because the point is quiet. No perfume, nothing competing with the room: just a slow flame in a bowl that still carries the marks of its fire.

What’s the difference between paying monthly and quarterly?+

Same candles, same price. Pay monthly (R350 / R600) and a candle, or two, from the current firing is couriered to you every month. Pay per quarter (R1 050 / R1 800) and the whole season, 3 or 6 candles, arrives in one box straight after each firing.

Can I use the bowl afterwards?+

Please do. Saggar-fired clay is porous and decorative, so it isn’t for food, but it’s beautiful for keys, jewellery, dried flowers or a small potted plant. Or send it back for a refill.

Can I pause or cancel?+

Any time before the next firing. Just reply to any email from me. The firing invitation is for subscribers who complete a full year.

How does delivery work?+

Everything is couriered to your door anywhere in South Africa: every month if you pay monthly, or once a season, straight after the firing, if you pay per quarter.

Who can come to a saggar firing?+

Subscribers who stay for all four firings (a full year), and anyone given the full year as a gift. Dates are shared four weeks ahead. There’s no accommodation at the studio, so book a guesthouse or Airbnb nearby.
